The nation's largest online mortgage lender plans to create nearly 400 jobs in Arizona as it opens a division in north Scottsdale early next year.
Quicken Loans Inc. already has started hiring for the positions, which pay an average of more than $75,000 after one year, even though it hasn't yet finalized a site. The company plans to issue an announcement about its plans Monday.
Quicken Loans employs more than 3,700 people in suburban Detroit but wanted a Western operation to better serve customers in later time zones. .
Even counting the school district employees and their family members who attended the bond issue meeting in Beatty Oct. 4, the turnout was disappointing. Some people commented that it was not adequately publicized, although flyers were posted and sent home with students. School board President Deborah Wescoatt conducted the meeting, starting out by showing a video of school board members and administrators visited to gather ideas for construction of the new high school and two elementary facilities planned for Pahrump. Wescoatt explained that permanent modular construction, which consists of units constructed in the contractor's own plant and then installed on concrete slabs could save the district considerable time and money. Using this approach, she said they should be able to have Floyd Elementary, which will be built using the last of the previous bond issue money, ready to open in August 2007.

Plans to build 25 single-family homes in Fountain Heights are delayed, but officials with the Birmingham Housing Authority said they hope to start construction next year. The contractor, Curtis White and Company, informed the housing authority last week they wouldn't be able to handle the project, said housing authority executive director Ralph Ruggs. The housing authority had a $3.4 million contract with Curtis White and Co. to build the homes. They will be sold to qualified low- and moderate-income buyers. As recently as last month, the housing authority approved an additional $351,000 to the company to cover the cost of materials, which have risen since the contract was awarded in February. The Fountain Heights project will be advertised again and a new contract should be awarded within the next two to three months, Ruggs said.
