News roundup: LHC moving into Florida; Home construction continues ...

Lafayette home health company buys Florida business: LHC Group has acquired Lifeline Home Health Care's Florida operations for an undisclosed amount. The move gives Lafayette-based LHC access to a market of 1.46 million people, with about 25% over the age of 65. This is the second major purchase of a Lifeline asset this year; earlier LHC bought out Lifeline's Kentucky operations. National housing market getting softer: Housing starts dropped 6% in August, reports the U.S. Commerce Department, twice as fast as expected. This is the lowest point for housing starts in three years. The sluggish pace of homebuilding, along with a slight increase in prices for finished goods, increases the chances the Federal Reserve will leave interest rates unchanged at its meeting Wednesday. Those Enron and WorldCom guys got their start somewhere: Fifty-six percent of business students surveyed admitted to cheating at least once during the last academic year, compared to 47% of graduate students in non-business programs, according to a report set for publication in the Academy of Management Learning & Education.

Fountain Heights home construction pushed to early 2007

Plans to build 25 single-family homes in Fountain Heights are delayed, but officials with the Birmingham Housing Authority said they hope to start construction next year.

The contractor, Curtis White and Company, informed the housing authority last week they wouldn't be able to handle the project, said housing authority executive director Ralph Ruggs.

The housing authority had a $3.4 million contract with Curtis White and Co. to build the homes. They will be sold to qualified low- and moderate-income buyers.

As recently as last month, the housing authority approved an additional $351,000 to the company to cover the cost of materials, which have risen since the contract was awarded in February.

The Fountain Heights project will be advertised again and a new contract should be awarded within the next two to three months, Ruggs said.

Conquering the Great Outdoors

Designed by Martha Kerr, CMKBD, of the Neil Kelly Co. in Portland, OR, the outdoor kitchen shown above shows the key concepts discussed in this article. For example, this outdoor cooking area has a ventilation system to control airborne cooking contaminates, and provides gas heat for chilly evenings. However, Kerr says in the future, shed use an electric heater because its easier to control than gas units. .
