OAK RIDGE - If terrorists were to gain access to nuclear materials stored at vulnerable Oak Ridge sites and detonate an improvised bomb, thousands of people would likely die, a watchdog group claims in a new report. The Project On Government Oversight called for immediate upgrades in security at the Y-12 National Security Complex and Oak Ridge National Laboratory to forestall a terrorist intrusion. .
Tyco Electronics announced that it has been awarded a coveted Global Technology Award in the category of ID Systems for its unique Reel-to-Reel RFID Line. The crystal glass award was presented by Global SMT & Packaging Magazine's Publisher and Editor-in-Chief Trevor Galbraith to Alan Strassman, product manager of Tyco Electronics Automation Group's RFID systems, on Wednesday, September 27, 2006 in a ceremony that took place at the Sofitel Hotel during the Assembly Technology Exposition. This line is an industry first ? it is an entire assembly system. The system has many features, including throughput up to 9,000 cycles per hour (cph), a full 20" wide Web process capability, and 12 ?m placement repeatability ? 3 Sigma. In addition, user benefits are high ? the system offers either passive or active designs, direct die pick from wafers down to 0.008", and positive displacement dispense technology.
October is Manufactured Housing Month in Mississippi, according to a recent press release from the Manufactured Housing Association in Flowood. The release went on to say that one out of every three Mississippi housing starts in the first six months of the year was a manufactured home. With so many manufactured homes sold in the state, there is no doubt the industry fills a need. But the volume of manufactured homes sold may help explain why so many people confuse them with modular construction. Emily Austill said she got a permit and financing for her modular home in Perkinston. But after the home was delivered and while finishing work was taking place, a neighbor protested her right to have the home, believing it to be manufactured. Austill said work has stopped on the home until the misunderstanding can be rectified.
Bhisho - The Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) has approved R54 million for the construction of salt crystallization plant at the Coega Industrial Development Zone (IDZ).
The construction of a purpose-built pure vacuum-dried (PVD) salt crystallization facility for the salt company Cerebos, will start in February 2007 within the IDZ near Port Elizabeth.
The IDZ is one of the government's high priority projects to bring about significant economic benefits to the Eastern Cape region, create employment, energise industrial development and promote international trade.
DBSA investment officer for this project, Simon Vincent pointed out that the Eastern Cape was one of the bank's designated "hot spots" in dire need of infrastructure development and job creation.
CAPE CORAL: Residents on Southwest 17th Avenue in Cape Coral expected to have their street torn up while the city installed new water and sewer lines, but they didn't expect it to stay that way. A bald eagle's nest two streets over stopped construction before the road could be repaved and it could remain that way for several more months. "It's a nightmare, it's a definite nightmare," said Kathleen Cherasia. Cherasia dreads driving down her street. Even though she inches along rock-covered road, she fears stones will fly up and damage her car. But that isn't Cherasia's biggest concern. "People walk the street, kids ride bikes, there's two schools here. I'm afraid of a safety issue. Someone could get hurt. Doesn't it look like a war zone to you, honestly?" said Cherasia.
