Glorious state vistas becoming big garbage heap

President Jefferson believed that "government is best which governs the least, because its people discipline themselves." A noble belief to be sure. But given the undisciplined behavior of countless numbers of illegal dumpers - locals and tourists - in Greater Sedona, the Red Rock Ranger District of the Coconino National Forest, the Prescott National Forest and the Verde Valley, it is, sad to say, empty rhetoric.

Time was when public lands were used for recreation, camping, partying and, around Sedona, vision quests and New Age ceremonies. These days, however, hikers on many of Sedona's most majestic trails, the area's greatest tourist attraction, encounter illegal dump sites, construction debris, toxic paint cans, rusted computers and even a boat, a 25-foot fiberglass fishing boat.

Understanding Economic Data: New-Home Construction

Every day, new information comes along to help investors make financial decisions. And as previous articles in this ongoing "Understanding Economic Data" series have discussed, releases of economic data on topics such as the U.S. current account and the Producer Price Index not only affect the financial markets those investors are involved in but also provide keys to understanding the overall economy. Today, we'll take a look at economic data as it relates to the housing industry. We'll help you understand how the numbers are calculated and what they mean to the economy.

With the boom in the real estate market over the past several years, the health of the economy has become increasingly dependent on business activity related to housing. Conversely, homebuilders such as Pulte (NYSE: PHM), Toll Brothers (NYSE: TOL), and Centex (NYSE: CTX) rely on a healthy housing market to sell their products.

Nigeria: Hostage-Taking - Don't Abandon Sites, Minister Pleads ...

Because of hostage-taking, contractors in the Niger-Delta have been abandoning work sites, prompting the Minister for Works, Chief Cornelius Adebayo, to plead with Julius Berger to stay, assuring them of safety.

Adebayo who was on a tour of federal road projects in the Niger Delta region, assured that as soon as he goes back to Abuja, he would process money for payment of compensations to the communities so that work would not be stalled.

Verona company JT Packard bought by PowerPlus

A Verona company that helps keep computer systems and other critical equipment running during power surges and brief outages is being sold and it will become a whole lot bigger.

JT Packard & Associates has plans to expand into Europe, to buy smaller companies here in the U.S. and in four to five years have as many as 500 employees in Verona.

The purchase by PowerPlus, an Anaheim, Calif., company that primarily provides electrical service to construction sites, is scheduled to close today.

The purchase means that JT Packard's growth will happen more quickly, according to its founder, Jeff Cason, who started the company in 1997 when he was 24.

Shedding light on adding solar to your home, business

The solar tour is over. I missed it myself, as I was collecting solar rays on a Florida Gulf beach. The water was a balmy 72 degrees, a nice relief from the 90-degree heat reflecting off the white sandy beach. Now I am back with a finish up on the Interview with David Boyd, Executive Director of Redwood Coast Energy Authority (RCEA):

John Ash: Lets talk about the Energy Authority. What does the RCEA do?

David Boyd: RCEA is a local joint powers authority. We are located at 517 Fifth St. in Eureka between F and G. It's a partnership of all seven incorporated cities and the county government. Their goal is to help develop sustainable energy -- efficient, clean, renewable, and affordable energy for Humboldt County. We have been in existence since 2003, and for the first several years we were an information-only program.

New modular barrier stops fork truck in tracks

The Rite-Hite Aftermarket Corporation introduced the GuardRite Sure-Stop Barrier System today which provides protection when it is critical to have a barrier that must stop a fork truck. The rugged GuardRite Sure-Stop is an 8-inch high barrier constructed from 3/16-inch formed cold rolled steel, and is reinforced with 7-inch wide by 3/8-inch full- height gussets for strength and durability. When anchored to a concrete floor, the Sure-Stop can stop a 10,000-pound fork truck with little or no deflection. The safety yellow painted GuardRite Sure-Stop Barrier System is available in 18, 24, 36, 48 or 60-inch lengths.

Integral steel gussets provide the Sure-Stop with support to help stop powered material handling equipment, while anchoring hardware make the installation clean and easy.
