SPOKANE -- Sen. Maria Cantwell and Republican opponent Mike McGavick disagreed about what the United States should do in Iraq and how to address the North Korean nuclear threat at two face-to-face forums here Thursday. Neither candidate landed any crippling blows during the two polite face-offs -- a televised half-hour debate before the Spokane Downtown Rotary Club and a 90-minute session with The Spokesman Review newspaper editorial board. That wasn't good news for McGavick, who needs something to boost his lagging poll numbers. .
Most owners choose the floor plan, finishes and fixtures that go into their custom-built homes. Juan Guevara made those choices and more. He selected each interior and exterior component and confirmed every detail in building his $1 million home in Delaware County. He also hand-picked the roofer, framer, excavator, drywall installer and a host of other subcontractors. Guevara made the decision to be his own general contractor, a choice more homeowners are making in projects big and small. He said his decision to manage the project has saved him a significant amount of money and given him more control over the project. "We went to many custom builders and found that, with the money we would save, we could have more house. I expect to save about $200,000," he said. "With a builder, you dont have as much control." Guevara, the owner of a flooringinstallation company, now has a second full-time job making sure the subcontractors show up when they are needed and that they follow the detailed plans drawn by an architect.

It's not your common or garden peace dividend. But the name Jollibee resonates so strongly in the Philippines that when President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo in her annual address to the nation applauded the army's success in tackling Muslim insurgents, she described how the Philippines' home-grown fast-food chain has now opened a store in the heart of the rebels' old stomping grounds. The Jollibee outlet on Basilan island, the home of the Abu Sayyaf militant group in the deep south of the country, is Jollibee Foods' 500th store. WEST SPRINGFIELD - A request for four modular classrooms at the Tatham Elementary School now tops the list of the schools' capital budget requests for fiscal 2008. The School Committee recently approved the list that the School Department will submit to the Capital Program Planning Committee. Initially, the School Committee's Facilities Planning Subcommittee had recommended that a request for funds to pay for architectural fees for the High School and Tatham School be top and second, respectively, on the list. The request is for $214,191 for the High School's fees and $844,200 for Tatham. Both expenditures will enable the School Department to get the ball rolling on its master plan to renovate and expand the city's aging school buildings.
(RTTNews) - The direction of the economy has become a contentious issue. Economists are divided in their views, with a few suggesting that the economy faces the threat of a recession, while others say it is just a moderation in growth that is currently underway. That leads us to the question as to what will be the Fed's stance going forward under both scenarios. According to Wachovia Securities economist John Silvia, the Fed's greater concern now is the state of the economy. Silvia believes that the central bank will focus on avoidance of further weakness in the economy rather than attempting to lower inflation. His outlook is for no change in the Fed funds rate through the end of the year. The Home Sales data for August released last week came in above market expectations. Existing Home Sales eased 0.5% to 6.30 million units, but still bettered the consensus expectation, while New Home Sales unexpectedly climbed 4.1% to 1.050 million units.
