High housing costs impacting residents

Twice recently, Crouch and her children have found out their landlord plans to sell the home they had been renting. Rent has been costly, homes are scarce, and each successive search for a new residence has been more difficult. "I'm just having a really hard time," said Crouch, who works at New Mexico State University- Carlsbad. "There are lots of other people like me, I am sure." Rent has skyrocketed to around $800 a month, Crouch said, and she is currently unable to afford or locate suitable lodging for herself and her children. Organizations like Habitat for Humanity and the Department of Housing and Urban Development can only help so many people. "We need some more community awareness about this. I'm not the only one in this situation," she said. "We need it (more affordable housing) now.

Kara's failure worries banks

Kara Homes' bankruptcy filing could hurt a number of banks and make lenders more cautious about lending to builders as the real estate market slumps.

The Chapter 11 filing last week by the East Brunswick-based home builder shows a surprising number of lenders facing large amounts of potential losses, analyst Albert Savastano wrote in a research report Monday.

Parish President Calls for Volunteers for New Playground Taking ...

Parish President Kevin Davis is sending out a call for St. Tammany residents to join together during three upcoming weekends to help install and landscape an amazing new playground. This finest, state-of-the-art children's playground in South Louisiana is about to be under construction in the middle of St. Tammany Parish at the St. Tammany Trailhead, on Koop Drive in Mandeville. The fenced-in, acre facility will be a model of safety, accessibility, fun and learning for
children as well as adults.

The Tammany Trace Foundation's Kid's Konnection Committee is planning three gala community playground building weekends on October 19, 20, and 21; October 26, 27, and 28; and November 2, 3, and 4. Weekend volunteers are asked to come by and work as long as they can between 7:00 a.m.
