Banks on shaky ground

When Kara Homes filed for bankruptcy this month, Amboy National Bank of Old Bridge was listed as the largest creditor with $58.2 million in loans.

When local real estate mogul Solomon Dwek's $400 million empire was frozen by a judge following charges of bank fraud, Amboy was again the largest creditor for $49.7 million.

Just as Amboy has been surprised by the loans gone bad, a real estate market in decline could spell financial trouble for other local banks and thrifts that have lent heavily for housing developments and commercial real estate, bank analysts and federal regulators say.

Industry analysts recall the savings-and-loan crisis from the late 1980s and worry that a new round of bank bloodletting could start if a once-robust real-estate market founders.

New Joint Compound Produces 'Heavy Dust' for Less Mess and Faster ...

CHICAGO, Oct. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- With every home renovation or new construction project, whether done by a professional or a weekend do-it- yourselfer (DIYer), comes the inevitable mess from drywall sanding. Now there's an innovative new way to reduce airborne drywall dust with SHEETROCK® brand dust control joint compound from USG.

This newly formulated joint compound has a unique quality that binds dust particles together and creates a "heavy dust" that, when sanded, falls straight to the floor. This joint compound produces the same quality finish as other all-purpose muds, without the cloud of dust -- making prep time and cleanup faster and easier. The dust control properties of SHEETROCK brand dust control joint compound have been independently verified with Worker Industrial Hygiene Testing.

PETER THOMAS BEING MAX WEBER

Hearing of Weber's death in 1920, many in the German academic community might have thought the news referred to Alfred Weber, Professor of Economics at the University of Heidelberg. While his elder brother Max had recently made a forceful return to public affairs, he was still known principally as the fin de siècle advocate of a muscular national imperialism and the author of some significant, albeit occasional, articles in specialist journals. Although he had tentatively resumed teaching and a more overt political role—having resigned his own post at Heidelberg in 1903, due to a deep depressive illness—Max Weber's scholarly reputation remained limited at the time of his death to a relatively narrow intellectual circle in Mitteleuropa.

Thereafter, the elder brother reclaimed his birthright; only a few years later, Alfred could complain that his own students were more interested in ‘Marx and Max' than in himself.
