Bespoke apartments created in 24 hours

October 16, 2006 From any tall building in almost any major city, dozens, possibly hundreds of roofs can be seen which carry free space which is not being employed the owners benefit. The free space on top of buildings has never been ascribed much value, and rarely gets any consideration on a balance sheet, but offers a major opportunity because in some locations, it represents very valuable virgin real estate indeed. Last week we wrote about the pre-fabricated Loftcube which can be made-to-order and helicoptered into position, commisiioned and fully functional in 24 hours, with prices starting at US$138,000. The Loftcube is a modern construction and doesnt suite everybody, as in most such instances, additional construction must be in sympathy with existing, important buildings. St. John's Wood Court is a century-old double winged mansion block directly opposite the W.

Putin convened a visiting session of the presidium of the State ...

MOSCOW, October 13 (Itar-Tass) - Vladimir Putin convened a visiting session of the presidium of the State Council in Yaroslavl, to discuss ways of developing the network of roads in the country.

"To brush up on the theme ahead of the meeting, Putin visited the construction site of a new 700-meter long bridge across the Volga, and an exhibition of road construction equipment.

Putin has called for spending extra budget revenues on financing infrastructures.

There have been incessant arguments where the snowballing reserves should be put to use. It is beyond doubt, if the resources are to be spent somehow, they must be spent on infrastructures roads, ports, airports and communication links, Putin said at a meeting of the State Councils presidium. I would place the roads before anything else.

A healthier take on the nursing home

After 14 years as a certified nursing assistant - the bottom of the food chain in the nursing home culture - she has tasted the future.

She is now a "Shahbaz" in a "Green House" - a respected worker in a new model of caring for the frailest elderly.

"I love it," Johnson said. "It's not a rush anymore. We get to spend quality time with [residents]. They think we're family. And we are."

Imagine a world in which the nursing home idea is turned upside down:

Just 10 residents live in a house, rather than the standard 120-180 people, and despite their dementia and infirmities, they're happier and healthier.

Nursing aides, with their new titles, are empowered and love their jobs.

Despite more personalized care, costs are the same or less than in nursing homes.

Heinz review journal examines health care issues

The HSR staff has been trying to network with other existing policy journals, including The Public Record, a journal published by the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin. The HSR is also planning to send representatives to national policy conferences to raise awareness of the journal.

In addition to editing a piece on pharmaceutical price controls by a group of students at the University of Chicago, Gutipati also submitted a paper on health care in rural India. Her piece focuses on the rural-urban divide in India and how globalization has affected the traditional Siddha healers in rural India as they compete with and work alongside modern doctors.

“There's a very international population at Heinz, and a lot of people are from developing nations," Gutipati said.

Hamilton Avenue test scores show progress closing achievement gap

After years of uncertainty surrounding its future and a move to temporary classrooms, Hamilton Avenue School appears to be making a comeback.

At least according to the results of the Connecticut Mastery Test (CMT), which found that out of 595 public elementary schools in the state, Hamilton Avenue School had the third largest increase in student scores for fourth graders between the 2004 and 2006 tests.

In 2004, only 47% of the schools fourth graders scored within goal range and in 2006 the number rose to 71%.

In addition, the school had a 17-point increase in the number of students who took the fall 2004 fourth grade CMT and the spring 2006 fifth grade CMT.

Efforts to improve results are part of the districts overall efforts to close achievement gaps in student performance.
