Construction Recyclers Find Diamonds in the Rubble

Recycling as much debris as possible has become part of the process of demolishing structures in this day and age.

Some items taken from buildings, such as steel, wood and concrete, are in high demand and command fairly nice prices.

Then there are items left behind that the demolition contractor can salvage and sell.

Pat Clauss, owner of Clauss Construction in Lakeside, removed a pair of wood and glass doors that once served as the entrance to Steve Wynns art collection at the Desert Inn in Las Vegas.

The doors, including frames with inlaid gold, and magnificent beveled glass designs, were installed at his new Lakeside office, along with glass sconces retrieved from the same project.

At several sites he has found workable heavy equipment and other machinery easily sold, or re-used by the company.

Rail or a real solution?

POPULATION GROWTH, business and tourism expansion, and improving incomes are in part causes of traffic congestion on Oahu, but most of the cause is bad transportation policy.

We are not alone in this. Bad transportation policy, mostly in the form of huge public transit subsidies, took over the nation in the last 25 years. Now we are experiencing the result, which is severe traffic congestion. Here are some specifics from the Federal Highway Administration and the American Public Transit Administration:

ยป Between 1961 and 2003, the United States doubled in population but transit trips remained the same. (Transit trips are those made primarily in public buses, metro rail, light rail and commuter rail systems.) Funding for these trips grew 5.3 times, from $7.4 billion to $39.8 billion in constant 2001 dollars.

John Crane to Demonstrate its Industry Offering at Utility Live ...

John Crane will be using the 2006 Utility Live exhibition to demonstrate the unique combination of specialist products and services that it offers to the utility industries market. The company has a well-deserved reputation for providing sealing and coupling solutions that are proven, practical and reliable. At the exhibition the company will be showing examples of its mechanical seals, seal support systems and power transmission couplings.

Sealing solutions
Cartridge seals for general duties will be represented by the 5600 Series. A modular construction with many interchangeable components allows this seal family to be applied throughout a plant, thus enabling spares inventory costs and downtime to be reduced while operating efficiency is increased.

Another cartridge seal on display will be the 4610 which is an excellent replacement for soft packings on general applications.

The Viikki Science Park

Viikki. The decision to build the Viikki Science Park was made in 1993 and two years later the first two Biocentres were erected. Today, the major part of the complex is already completed. By the end of 2004, the buildings in the science park have 160 000 m2 of facilities constructed. Until 2010, there will be 5000 jobs and similar number of students as well as 14 000 inhabitants of the residential neighbourhood. Also thanks to the investment of 150 mil. Euro, the former countryside surrounding of Helsinki has developed into the Silicon Valley of biotechnology.

Foreclosures up dramatically in SD, Riverside counties

Foreclosure activity has shown a dramatic increase in San Diego and Riverside counties, far outpacing most of California and the rest of the nation, according to a foreclosure tracking firm, RealtyTrac. The large disparity is probably because of the cooling real estate market in what is one of the most expensive regions of the country, according to one local economist.

San Diego County had 4,069 properties in some stage of foreclosure for the quarter that ended in September, compared with 970 properties for the same quarter in 2005, an increase of 319 percent. Riverside had 4,403 such properties for the most recent quarter, versus 1,297 for the same quarter in 2005, an increase of 239 percent.
