  ExxonMobil expands BR operation

ExxonMobil will create 55 jobs by installing $20 million worth of plastics-producing equipment in a north Baton Rouge warehouse.Construction of the ExxonMobil Chemical project will begin in October and wrap up next spring.

The 55 workers, largely process operators, will average more than $45,000 in annual income.

Training will ramp up in early 2007 as 40 constructions workers complete the installation in a 500,000-square-foot warehouse at ExxonMobil’s plastics plant, on Howard Road near La. 19.

The company already produces a variety of plastic goods in pellets that emerge from a polymer process.

The new equipment — which will power several production lines — takes the process further and customizes blends of plastics for automotive and consumer goods manufacturers.

IKEA To Build Manufacturing Facility In Virginia

Swedwood, the industrial group within IKEA, the leading home furnishings retailer, announced plans to build a manufacturing facility in Danville, Virginia. The factory will be the Swedish companys first furniture production location in the United States, and will produce a variety of wood-based IKEA products such as EXPEDIT bookshelves, LACK coffee and side tables, MAGIKER modular entertainment systems and PAX wardrobe frames. Pending permits and construction, the facility will open in early 2008, and will create up to 740 jobs.

The 810,000 square-foot future Swedwood factory will be built on 209 acres in Cane Creek Centre, in the City of Danville, VA in Pittsylvania County, VA approximately 50 miles north of Greensboro, NC. The close proximity to many IKEA stores and distribution centers, coupled with good regional infrastructure and available land, make Danville ideal for this North American production facility, said Bengt Danielsson, North American president of Swedwood.

Pond's construction in St. Peters could threaten levee, officials ...

City officials are concerned that a pond built to control runoff water could pose a structural threat to the nearly completed Lakeside 370 Business Park levee.

As a result, City Administrator Bill Charnisky is seeking authority to spend $252,000 to cope with the matter if no other solution is found soon.

The concern is whether sand was exposed during excavation for the pond, which is just outside the levee in the Mississippi River flood plain. If sand is exposed, water from a major flood could seep under the levee and weaken it, Charnisky said.

Trinity Products Inc. built the pond to hold rainwater runoff from its 45-acre plant site in St. Charles, just east of the Lakeside 370 levee.

Trinity's owner, Robert Griggs, said Friday that the pond had been built to proper specifications, adding that the project was under way months before levee construction began last year.
