Construction Recyclers Find Diamonds in the Rubble

Recycling as much debris as possible has become part of the process of demolishing structures in this day and age.

Some items taken from buildings, such as steel, wood and concrete, are in high demand and command fairly nice prices.

Then there are items left behind that the demolition contractor can salvage and sell.

Pat Clauss, owner of Clauss Construction in Lakeside, removed a pair of wood and glass doors that once served as the entrance to Steve Wynns art collection at the Desert Inn in Las Vegas.

The doors, including frames with inlaid gold, and magnificent beveled glass designs, were installed at his new Lakeside office, along with glass sconces retrieved from the same project.

At several sites he has found workable heavy equipment and other machinery easily sold, or re-used by the company.

Contractors demolish Amish schoolhouse

BEIJING, Oct. 12 (Xinhuanet) -- The Amish of West Nickel Mines, Pa. don't believe in using modern machines or technology, but it was heavy construction equipment that razed the one-room schoolhouse Wednesday where a gunman fatally shot five girls and injured five others.

The Amis h relied on an outside demolition crew with heavy machinery to bring closure to the painful chapter in their peaceful community.

I think the Amish leaders made the right decision," Mike Hart, a spokesman for the Bart Fire Company, said as loaders lifted debris into dump trucks to be hauled away.

It seems this is a type of closure for them," Hart said, as a group of mostly Amish gathered to watch as the schools bell tower toppled and the walls crumpled.

Foreclosures up dramatically in SD, Riverside counties

Foreclosure activity has shown a dramatic increase in San Diego and Riverside counties, far outpacing most of California and the rest of the nation, according to a foreclosure tracking firm, RealtyTrac. The large disparity is probably because of the cooling real estate market in what is one of the most expensive regions of the country, according to one local economist.

San Diego County had 4,069 properties in some stage of foreclosure for the quarter that ended in September, compared with 970 properties for the same quarter in 2005, an increase of 319 percent. Riverside had 4,403 such properties for the most recent quarter, versus 1,297 for the same quarter in 2005, an increase of 239 percent.
