  When MLSE buys, we pay

Your Toronto Maple Leafs will have a new practice facility built just for them as part of a $29 million, four-rink ice heaven to be erected by the Lakeshore Lions and here's the perfect name for the joint.

Let's call it BOHICA Flats, the name provided by a friend who explains that the letters stand for Bend Over, Here It Comes Again.

That's a warning we could all well heed when it comes to mixing taxpayer money with Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment. Our city council, co-conspirators in past stadium/arena road apples with MLSE, is set to discuss, possibly even approve, the public's participation Monday at city hall.

MLSE, putting up no money up-front, gets a brand new practice centre for the Leafs and Marlies (as long as they're around), plus control of arena naming rights and where have you heard that one before? MLSE also gets 80 per cent of revenue from rinkboard advertising.

Local manufacturer receives county revolving loan

INDIANA--What is now known as KH Controls Inc., a Blairsville-based designer and manufacturer of electronic products for the underground coal mining industry, modestly began 13 years ago in the basement of company president Kevin Huczko.

Now, with the help of a $100,000 term loan from the Indiana County Revolving Loan Fund to KH Development LLC., Huczko is looking forward to a new period of growth for the company. The Indiana County Commissioners approved the loan at their regular Wednesday meeting.

With the loan, KH Controls expects to retain 49 full-time jobs and create five more over the next three years.

Huczko explained the company previously had problems finding new employees due to limited qualifications and space restrictions at their current location, including inadequate parking facilities.

FIRST COAST TICKER: Area companies show their shine over time

With the Dow Jones industrial average reaching record heights earlier this month, you would probably assume it's been a good time for Jacksonville stocks as well. As we've told you many times in the past, Jacksonville stocks always outperform the rest of the market.

Iowa Index: Indicators predict stable state economy

Iowa's economy is on solid, relatively flat footing, according to fiscal analysts who released new economic indicators this month to help state leaders better predict revenue for services like education and roads.

"We're not seeing the rapid growth that we had a year ago, but the growth is still strong," said Mike Lipsman, manager of the tax research division of the Iowa Department of Revenue.

Iowa's economic "plateau ... is actually pretty good right now," Lipsman said. "There are a lot of parts of the country that are seeing major slowdowns."

Marisa DiNatale, an economist for Moody's Economy.com, said Iowa "is far outperforming the rest of the Midwest," but generally lags behind some parts of the national economy.

"That's the way it's always been," she said.
